Sauté onion in oil until brown.
Add garlic and carrot and sauté for another few minutes.
Add split peas, broth and bay leaves, bring to a boil and simmer for about 1 hour or until peas are soft and soup looks creamy.
Before serving, stir in the thyme, lemon juice and zest.
