Kothalere Rondha Matidail (Jackfruit with split bl

  • 150 g one inch cubed jackfruit pieces
  • 100 g split blackgram
  • 70 g half ripe papaya pieces
  • 2 medium onion paste
  • 1 1/2 tsp ginger paste
  • 3 tbsp mustard oil
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 3 dry chillies
  • 1/2 tsp paanchphuron
  • 1/2 tsp cumin powder
  • 2 tsp pure ghee
  • 1 tsp lurmeric powder
  • salt to taste
  • 500 ml water


Soak the split blackgram for about 4 hours.

Wash the dal.

Boil the dal until soft.

Boil the jackfruit pieces.

In a kadhai heat the mustard oil.

Temper with bay leaves, dry chillies and paanchphuron.

Add the onion paste and fry, stirring it continuously for about half a minute.

Add the ginger and garlic paste and fry until oil floats to the top.

Add the papaya pieces and stir for about a minute.

Add cumin powder, coriander powder and turmeric powder.

Also add sugar and stir fry a while, sprinkling water twice as you go.

Add the boiled jackfruit pieces and stir for a while.

Add the hot dal, sugar and salt to taste.

Cook covered for about 2 minutes.

Remove cover and add garam masala powder.

Stir and cover. Switch off the gas.

After 2 minutes add the pure ghee.

Stir and serve with puri or rice.
