Mangalooti with usoi

  • 2 1/2 cups soaked white dried peas
  • 1/2 tsp sodium bicarbonate/cooking soda
  • red/green chillies, sliced
  • 1/2 cup chopped Maroinapakpi (alternatively you can use spring onion leaves)
  • 1/4 cup rice
  • 1/2 cup usoi (bamboo shoot), sliced thin
  • salt to taste
  • 4 1/2 cups water
  • 6 tbsp oil
  • 1 medium onion, sliced
  • 1/2 tsp jeera powder


Put all the ingredients except those for tempering into the pressure cooker with 3 cups water and put on heat.

When the cooker is just about to whistle, put off the gas (DO NOT LET IT WHISTLE). Let it cool down naturally.

Now open the lid and add the remaining water, stir and simmer.

In a pan, heat the oil until smoking hot, lower the heat to medium and put bay leaves and onion.

Fry the onion until golden brown.

Now add the contents of the cooker into the pan, add jeera powder, stir and cook for a minute.

Put off the gas, transfer into a bowl and serve.
